About ARPC

Description

The Amarillo Rifle and Pistol Club (AR&PC) is a National Rifle Association (NRA), Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA), and Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) affiliated private membership shooting club located on 40 acres of Club-owned land on North Western Street , 2 miles north of Loop 335.  Facilities include two rifle ranges, three outdoor pistol ranges, and a building housing a classroom and 25 yard indoor range for air rifle/pistol, smallbore rifle and bullseye pistol competition.

History

The AR&PC was formed in 1936 in the basement of an unfinished hotel located at 7th and Tyler in downtown Amarillo The Club operated in this building from 1936 to 1941.  In 1951, Amarillo attorney G.R. Whittington reorganized the Club at its present location on land he owned.  Mr. Whittington was also instrumental in the development of the NRA’s National Shooting Complex south of Raton, New Mexico, which is named in his honor.  From 1951 until his passing in 1984, Mr. Whittington rented the Club the land and facilities for $1.00 per year.  That rent was never collected or accepted by the owner.  In 1986 the Club purchased the land and facilities from Mr. Whittington’s estate.

Our Club has over 50 years of operation without a fatality or serious injury.  We have trained many hundreds of young people to shoot and have provided educational and sporting programs to the people of Amarillo We take great pride in our long record of safety and community service in providing a safe place to shoot, compete, and train succeeding generations of young shooters in the safe, legal, ethical, and accurate use of firearms.

Membership

The Amarillo Rifle & Pistol Club welcomes new members.  Any person at least 21 years old, not legally restricted from owning firearms, and a member of the National Rifle Association is eligible for consideration.  Persons desiring to join the Club should download the application form and complete it.  Two current members of the Club must sponsor the applicant and will endorse the appropriate lines of the application form.  If no members are known to the applicant, the applicant is urged to participate in any of the various Club Programs/Events (matches) all of which are open to the public.  The applicant should introduce himself to and build a rapport with members present at these events.  Applicants should not approach members strictly for sponsorship or signatures as the sponsors must vouch for applicants’ integrity, attention to safety, and agreement with Club philosophy. This is best achieved by proper deportment during active participation in Club events.  The applicant must attend a regular Club meeting (posted on the Club Calendar) accompanied by at least one of their sponsors.  The sponsor will introduce the applicant to the members present at the meeting and speak on his/her behalf.  After the introduction, and any discussion of the applicants’ interests and qualifications, a vote on the membership application is held.  Once inducted the new member must attend the on-site Club orientation program before membership (range use) privileges are bestowed.  Orientation programs are scheduled by a designated Orientation Officer. Applicants unable to attend the next scheduled orientation program are required to schedule a make-up orientation with the Orientation Officer at a mutually agreeable time.

Membership is annual, June 1 through May 31st of the following year.  New members pay a one-time $50 initiation fee.  Dues for Regular Members (under 65) are $100/year; Senior Members (65 and older) pay $75/year.  New members joining the Club after June 1 pay prorated annual dues based on the time remaining to May 31st.   Members are encouraged to participate in one of the three or four Work Days held during the year to keep the Club clean and functioning.  Those who do not, or can not, participate are assessed an additional $10/year on their annual dues.

The Club has a membership cap of 375 members. The current membership openings are usually reported in the monthly newsletter. Applications are held on file by the Club Secretary for no more than one year. Contact the Club Secretary concerning available openings and the status of applications. Applications may be mailed to the Club Secretary, but to become a member you must personally attend a regular Club meeting with application and sponsor(s) on hand and be introduced and voted on by members present.
